Whispers of Kindness

Kindness whispers.

Family recipes, preserved by hand and mailed each month, with the story of the person who wrote them down.

where this came from

This began with a question.

Someone asked an AI what human beings would be remembered for, and kindness did not make the list. Not because we lack it, though. Because we never write it down.

We do not announce our kindness. We feel something, we act, and we move on. The written record catches our cruelty, because cruelty performs for an audience. Our goodness went somewhere quieter. It went into the meal.

A recipe card says cream the butter and sugar. It does not say I made this every Sunday for forty years for people I loved. The kindness is in the writing down and the passing on, so that someone else could feed the people they love.

Those cards are still out there, in drawers and boxes and the backs of cupboards, disappearing one household at a time. This project gathers them, and finally reads the record for what it is.

the Heirloom Archive

One recipe a month, made beautiful and mailed to you

i.The card arrives

A hand-collaged recipe page in your mailbox each month, punched for a binder and sized for a recipe box.

The original recipe is preserved exactly as it was written. Beside it sits a gentle adaptation for the modern kitchen, asking what she might have made with what we have now.

ii.Turn it over

On the back, the archive record. Who made it, who they made it for, where and when, and how it travelled to reach you.

Where possible, a reproduction of the original handwriting itself.

the story is the substance

iii.Watch it cook

Each month, one recipe is cooked and adapted on film, and the story of the person behind it is told in full.

The card preserves the original. The video brings it into your kitchen.

Recipes are chosen for the strength of the story attached to them, not for culinary merit. An ordinary recipe with a rich history is exactly what this archive exists for.

the invitation

Send us a recipe, and the person behind it

If your family holds a recipe with a story behind it, we would love to receive it. It does not need to be impressive. It needs to have belonged to someone.

to help you begin
  • Whose recipe was this, and what was your relationship to them?
  • Where and when did they live?
  • Who did they make it for? Was there an occasion, a person, a hard season?
  • What do you remember about them making it?
  • Did it come from further back, another country, another generation?
  • Is there anything about them you would want remembered?

Send recipes, photographs of handwriting, and stories to
lela@whispersofkindness.ca or by post to Whispers of Kindness [mailing address to come] West Kelowna, BC

The recipe and the story are the gift.
